Seven years ago on October 13th, 2015 I met one of the most legendary personalities on earth and my personal hero Ben Ferencz — the only living prosecutor from the war-crime trials that followed the Holocaust. He prosecuted nazis in Nuremberg, now he supports prosecuting “putin and his thugs.”

This picture captures a moment where we discuss Ukraine after russia invaded Crimea and Donbas. He is repeating one phrase to me over and over again: “Never ever give up.”

Today, after 7 years of this meeting, russia is bombing my home region Volyn in North Western Ukraine. I call my family and ask if they are “okay,” whatever it means. I won’t even go into what horrors are happening in the rest of Ukraine.

Today, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted a resolution declaring russia a terrorist regime. I’ve sent letters to Senators Padilla and Feinstein urging them to adopt S. 4848, designating russia a state sponsor of terrorism. I work closely with an organization that collects evidence of war crimes, environmental crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of genocide against Ukrainians committed by russia in Ukraine, and provides this evidence to those involved in prosecuting russia for war crimes.

Many things have happened in the last 7 years, and seeing this picture today brings a new meaning to it. We will never give up.
