TORTURED TO DEATH. FOREVER 39
The story of one Ukrainian that the whole world needs to know
Auschwitz? Buchenwald? No. Modern-day Mordovia.
His name was Mykola Andreiyuk. His call “Khram” (Temple). He was a Senior Sailor in the 36th Separate Marine Brigade. A Ukrainian. A defender. A human being. He was alive until November 14, 2023. He was tortured to death in a penal colony in Mordovia—within the territory of a fascist Mordor.
He was only 39. Born in the village of Novopodilske in the Dnipropetrovsk region, he grew up in a large family. He was a good student. He worked at a mining and processing plant in Kryvyi Rih, supported his mother, and helped his brothers and sister. He never had a family of his own—because he was serving. Because he chose Ukraine.
In 2014, he volunteered for the National Guard, took part in the ATO/JFO (Anti-Terrorist Operation/Joint Forces Operation), and later transferred to the Marines. He was wounded in 2021. He could have been discharged, but he stayed. When the full-scale invasion began, Mykola was already on the front line.
Shyrokyne. Mariupol. Spring 2022. Surrounded. Cut off from communication. Just one single letter to his sister: “I’m alive, but we are surrounded by rashists [Russian fascists]. I’ve burned my documents. And I’m keeping a grenade with me—in case I’m captured.”
On April 4, 2022, Mykola was taken prisoner. He was transported to Olenivka, and from there—to the camps in Mordovia. Into a modern-day GULAG.
In the very places where the Rashists once destroyed Ukrainians in Soviet-era camps, they have destroyed another Ukrainian. 18 months of torture. Reduced to 60 kilograms. His heart gave out. He died—far from home, without a lawyer, without a verdict, and with no hope of rescue.
Russia “returned” his body in December 2023, yet his family only learned of it four months later.
This is a war crime. This is torture. This is state-sanctioned murder. And it is no exception; it is the system.
What was done to Mykola is part of the mass extermination of Ukrainian prisoners of war—part of a plan to erase the identity of a people who refused to submit.
Mykola was laid to rest in Kryvyi Rih. Posthumously, he was awarded the honorary badge “Mariupol: Defended and Victorious” and the UOC-KP medal “For Self-Sacrifice and Love for Ukraine.”
There is only one thing we can bring back: memory. A memory that will serve as an indictment. A memory that will cast out fear. A memory that will ensure there can be no negotiation with those who kill people in their prison cells.
Mykola is survived by his mother, three brothers, a sister, and his nieces and nephews.
And this photograph—taken after his body was returned.
An image that belongs in a future museum of Rashist terror, displayed alongside photographs from Bucha, Izium, and Yahidne.
So that it never happens again.
So that no one forgets.
And no one forgives.
