RUSSIA STRIKES OVER THE KYIV-PECHERS LAVRA

The enraged empire, sensing its end, does not spare historical monuments of world scale, with which it associates claimed “thousand-year history”

Statement Concerning the Russian Attack on the Holy Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Caves Monastery — A Sacred Shrine of Orthodox Christianity

With profound sorrow in my heart and tears of prayer, I have learned of yet another crime of Russian aggression – the attack upon the Dormition Cathedral of the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of the greatest sacred treasures not only of the Ukrainian people but of the entire Orthodox Christian world.

It is especially painful to realize that this crime occurred on the Feast of All Saints of the Land of Ukraine, when the Church offers prayers in remembrance of those who sanctified our land through their holy lives and bore witness to their faithfulness to Christ. On this sacred day, Russian aggression deliberately reached toward the heart of Ukraine’s spiritual heritage – a holy place that for centuries has served as a beacon of prayer, repentance, spiritual enlightenment, and encounter with God.

As the roof of the Dormition Cathedral burns, it is not only the heart of Ukraine that suffers. The heart of every Christian who understands the value of holiness, memory, and spiritual heritage suffers as well. An attack upon a sacred shrine is not merely the destruction of stone and architecture. It is an attempt to destroy the memory of a people, their soul, and their right to pray, to live, and to pass on their faith to future generations.

Again and again, we affirm that human life is a sacred gift from God. Every life lost, every child deprived of parents, every family torn apart by war is a wound upon the body of humanity. Yet together with human life, sacred also are those holy places where generations have encountered God and learned the virtues of love, mercy, truth, and compassion. Therefore, the attack upon the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is not merely a crime against Ukraine – it is a crime against Christian civilization, against the historical memory of humanity, and against the very spiritual roots of the Orthodox world.

Today, the Orthodox world has no moral right to remain a silent observer. We cannot stand by in silence while the cradle of Christianity in the lands of ancient Kyivan Rus’ – from which the light of the Gospel spread to many nations – is subjected to relentless attack. Silence in the face of evil becomes complicity in evil. Christ calls us to be witnesses to the truth, not passive spectators of injustice.

We unequivocally condemn Russian aggression and all criminal acts directed against the people of Ukraine, its holy shrines, its culture, and its spiritual heritage. We also affirm that those who support the crimes of the Russian regime or seek to justify violence cannot escape moral responsibility before God and history.

Today we are called not only to offer a political or military response to evil, but above all to provide a spiritual resistance to it. We must pray more fervently, stand more firmly in the faith, and bear witness more courageously to the truth of Christ. Evil cannot be overcome by hatred; it is conquered through truth, love, sacrifice, and unwavering faith in God. Yet love never means indifference toward injustice, and mercy never means silent acceptance of evil.

We offer our fervent prayers and unwavering support to His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine, the brother hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and faithful of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, especially the brethren of the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. As this ancient cradle of Orthodox Christianity endures the pain of aggression and violence, we stand united in prayer before the Lord, asking that He protect His holy sanctuaries, strengthen His faithful servants, and preserve the sacred legacy entrusted to the people of Ukraine through the centuries. The caves of the Lavra, sanctified by the prayers, ascetic struggles, and holy relics of countless saints, bear witness to the living presence of God among His people. No act of destruction can extinguish the light of Christ that shines forth from these holy places.

In this time of sorrow, I call upon the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, all people of goodwill, and Christians throughout the world to raise their prayers for Ukraine, for the protection of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, for the preservation of innocent lives, and for the swift end of this terrible war.

May the Lord strengthen the suffering people of Ukraine. May the Venerable Fathers of the Kyiv Caves intercede for their land. May all the Saints of the Land of Ukraine become heavenly protectors of those who today endure the horrors of war.

And may the Protecting Veil of the Most Holy Theotokos shelter Ukraine, her people, and her sacred shrines from every evil and every destruction.

Заява щодо російського нападу на Свято-Успенський собор Священної Києво-Печерської Лаври — святиню світового Православ’я та християнства

З глибоким болем у серці та зі сльозами молитви ми дізналися про черговий злочин російської агресії – удар по Успенському собору Свято-Успенської Києво-Печерської лаври, одній із найвеличніших святинь не лише українського народу, але й усього православного християнського світу.

Особливо боляче усвідомлювати, що цей злочин стався у день пам’яті Всіх святих землі Української, коли Церква підносить молитви за тих, хто своїм життям освятив нашу землю та засвідчив вірність Христові. У цей святий день російська агресія свідомо простягнула свою руку до серця духовної спадщини України – до святині, яка протягом століть була місцем молитви, покаяння, духовного просвітлення та зустрічі людини з Богом.

Коли палає дах Успенського собору, болить не лише серце українця. Болить серце кожного християнина, який розуміє ціну святості, пам’яті та духовної спадщини. Бо напад на святиню – це не лише руйнування каменю чи історичної споруди. Це спроба знищити пам’ять народу, його душу, його право молитися, жити та передавати свою віру майбутнім поколінням.

Ми знову і знову наголошуємо: людське життя є святим даром Божим. Кожна загублена душа, кожна дитина, яка втратила батьків, кожна родина, розділена війною, є раною на тілі людства. Але разом із людським життям святими є і ті місця, де покоління людей знаходили Бога, навчалися любові, милосердю та правді. Тому атака на Києво-Печерську лавру є не лише злочином проти України – це злочин проти християнської цивілізації, проти історичної пам’яті людства та проти самого духовного коріння православного світу.

Сьогодні православний світ не має морального права залишатися байдужим спостерігачем. Ми не можемо мовчки дивитися, як під ударами ракет страждає колиска християнства на землях Київської Русі, звідки світло Євангелія поширилося до багатьох народів. Мовчання перед лицем зла стає співучастю у ньому. Христос закликає нас бути свідками правди, а не байдужими споглядачами несправедливості.

Ми рішуче засуджуємо російську агресію та всі злочинні дії, спрямовані проти українського народу, його святинь, культури та духовної спадщини. Також наголошуємо, що ті, хто підтримують злочини російського режиму або виправдовують насильство, не можуть уникнути моральної відповідальності перед Богом та історією.

Сьогодні ми покликані дати не лише політичну чи військову відповідь злу, але насамперед духовну відсіч. Ми повинні ще ревніше молитися, ще міцніше стояти у вірі, ще наполегливіше свідчити про правду Христову. Зло не можна перемогти ненавистю; його перемагають правдою, любов’ю, жертовністю та незламною вірою в Бога. Проте любов ніколи не означає байдужості до несправедливості, а милосердя не означає мовчазної згоди зі злочином.

Ми підносимо наші щирі молитви та висловлюємо непохитну підтримку Блаженнішому Митрополиту Київському і всієї України Епіфанію, братам-архієреям, духовенству, чернецтву та вірним Православної Церкви України, а особливо братії Свято-Успенської Києво-Печерської Лаври. У той час, коли ця прадавня колиска Православного християнства переживає біль агресії та насильства, ми єднаємося в молитві перед Господом, благаючи Його захистити Свої святі обителі, укріпити Своїх вірних служителів і зберегти священну духовну спадщину, довірену народові України крізь віки. Печери Лаври, освячені молитвами, подвижницькими трудами та святими мощами незліченних угодників Божих, свідчать про живу присутність Бога серед Його народу. Жоден акт руйнування не здатний погасити світло Христове, яке сяє з цих святих місць.

У цей скорботний час закликаю духовенство та вірних Української Православної Церкви США, усіх людей доброї волі та всіх християн світу піднести свої молитви за Україну, за захист Києво-Печерської лаври, за збереження життя невинних людей та за якнайшвидше припинення війни.

Нехай Господь укріпить стражденний український народ. Нехай преподобні отці Києво-Печерські моляться за свою землю. Нехай усі святі землі Української стануть небесними заступниками тих, хто сьогодні переживає жахіття війни.

І нехай Покров Пресвятої Богородиці вкриє Україну, її народ та її святині від усякого зла і руйнування.
