ZAPORIZHZHIA NPP AS RUSSIA’S TOOL OF WAR

As Grid covered since early last month in its newsletter, the state of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – the largest in Ukraine and Europe, and located about 300 miles away from Chernobyl – has been top of mind for Ukrainian and international officials and observers. The plant, which is under Russian control, is in an active war zone, and the situation on the ground there has been deteriorating.
A few days ago, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors found “extremely complex, extremely challenging” conditions at the facility. Now, the IAEA is calling for a demilitarized safe zone at Zaporizhzhia.
Nikhil Kumar, Dan Vergano and Kseniia Lisnycha spoke with Hryhoriy Plachkov, the former chairman of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, about the situation:
