It has been encouraging to see how the heavy bombardment by Ukrainian land based missiles helped Putin to make his generous gesture of ‘goodwill’ by evacuating Snake Island. Once this target was registered with the Ukraine’s new long range artillery there were only two options run or die — they ran.
This tiny rock in the Black Sea is important because it can be used as an unsinkable missile base that covers the maritime approach lanes to Odesa.
When Snake Island is occupied again by Ukraine it will be reinforced and prepared as a site for Harpoon missiles. Then the Russian Navy will be forced back another 250km or 150 nautical miles into the Black Sea. The island can also act as a platform for surface to air missiles to further defend UA airspace from Odesa to Crimea.
This protection might enable Ukraine to safely clear a shipping lane through the sea mines that block the approaches to Odesa and protect food ships from Russian interference.
Snake Island may be small – but it has great strategic and symbolic value. This Russian retreat is the first clear and obvious sign that top level western weapons can turn the tide and push the Russian forces back to where they came from.
