WHEN THINGS BREAK
3 min read
When things break, look not at the fragments and mourn the loss of the whole, but look at the space created between the pieces.
Ireland joined other countries yesterday in calling for Ukraine’s entry into the European Union in the shortest possible time.
It will come as no surprise that Germany and France strongly oppose this and seek delays, prevarications and endless preconditions that spill out like a rash.
Just as Türkiye was alienated over decades, they intend the same for Ukraine. With prejudice, dressed up as due process, seeking to persuade you, the citizen, to forget, dull your outrage and accept their bureaucracy, a system of government in which most of the important decisions are taken by state officials rather than by elected representatives, muting your voice, your passion and your moral compass.
Of course, these laggards will use excessively complicated administrative procedures to long-finger Ukraine, so that they have time to preserve their hegemony. Understanding events as a disassembled jigsaw needing to be re-made.
That’s not our future.
Many understand this and are frustrated by not knowing what to do.
This is simple. You can deny their intentions.
There are other governments and other civil servants, in Germany and France as well, that are doing so. Support them, encourage them, be vocal in recognising those that are aligned to your moral compass.
Make it clear at every opportunity that your vote, your support, your consideration is conditional. As it was in the late 1980’s through the 1990’s, when people were sick of government manipulations and dominance.
Had people not done what they did, there would be a Berlin wall and two Germany’s, there would be an Apartheid South Africa, there would be a Soviet Union. There would be war in Ireland.
It was the people who stopped these things. You!
It is true. Ukraine is a touchpoint. As iconic as the fall of the Berlin Wall, in that it is a denial of oppression and authoritarianism.
It is a way for you to get your voice heard. It is a way to take back control.
Authoritarianism is not only in political matters, but governance also. And there’s a lot to be unhappy with.
So, today, or when you are so disposed, make it clear. You are not persuaded by the current state of affairs and support is conditional.
The dark cynical aspects of humans has facilitated an outbreak of evil, where rape, torture, abduction, ethnic cleansing, destruction and pain so intense people cannot breath, has become reality for millions of people.
Hate is hurtful and these prevarications are on the hate spectrum, but we, the people cannot let it win. We can’t.
We are in the darkness of a cold night, but when dawn breaks, it must be a new day. It cannot be what was, it can only be new.
To make things better, visibly support those that are supporting Ukraine. They are working to make the spaces between the broken fragments form a better future.
