RUSSIA ACCUSES US OF ESCALATING WAR

Russia has hit out at the U.S. over its decision to send advanced rocket systems to Ukraine as part of a $700 million aid package to help the besieged country fight Russia’s invasion. A Kremlin spokesperson accused the U.S. of “deliberately and painstakingly pouring gasoline on the fire” with its weapons commitment.
Multiple-launch rocket systems can hit targets from 50 miles away; senior Biden administration officials said Ukraine had pledged to not fire the rockets into Russia. The arms delivery was announced as Ukrainian troops began retreating from the key eastern city of Sievierodonetsk.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country is seeing up to 100 soldiers killed in action and 500 more wounded every day.
• Germany promised to send Ukraine anti-aircraft missiles and radar systems.
• The European Union agreed a partial Russian oil embargo, the “harshest economic penalty yet imposed on Russia,” said The New York Times.
• The war in Ukraine pushed inflation in the eurozone to a record 8.1% in May; energy prices surged 39.2%.
• Russia halted natural gas exports to Denmark and the Netherlands after the countries refused to pay with rubles.
• A Ukrainian court sentenced two Russian soldiers to 11 and a half years in prison for shelling a town in the country’s northeast.
