THE OLDEST CITIES IN THE WORLD WERE IN UKRAINE
In the mid-1960s, a Soviet military topographer was analyzing aerial photos of Ukraine when he came across some unusual shadows. Looking closely at the patterns of plants in a number of fields, he found dark patches in concentric circles so neatly arranged that they must have been the result of something manmade. Further research soon confirmed that the growth patterns of these plants were indeed caused by ancient remains sitting just under the surface.
Experts then discovered that roughly 6,000 years ago, Ukraine was dotted with massive settlements made up of buildings arranged in concentric circles — and they could be the oldest cities in world history. But because of the Iron Curtain, resistance to questioning established historical narratives, and other countries’ lack of faith in Soviet science, these findings went virtually unnoticed in the West at the time.
Subsequent research, however, has only strengthened the theory that the world’s first cities were not in Mesopotamia, but Ukraine. Built by the Cucuteni–Trypillia culture that flourished in the region between 5500 and 2750 B.C.E., these “Trypillia megasites” could predate the Fertile Crescent’s first cities by centuries and rewrite the story of when human urbanization took root.

У середині 1960-х років радянський військовий топограф аналізував аерофотознімки України, коли натрапив на незвичайні тіні. Уважно розглядаючи візерунки рослин на кількох полях, він виявив темні плями у концентричних колах, настільки акуратно розташовані, що вони, мабуть, були результатом чогось рукотворного.
Подальші дослідження незабаром підтвердили, що особливості росту цих рослин справді були спричинені давніми залишками, що знаходилися прямо під поверхнею. Потім експерти виявили, що приблизно 6000 років тому Україна була всіяна масивними поселеннями, що складалися з будівель, розташованих у концентричних колах, — і вони могли бути найстарішими містами у світовій історії. Але через «залізну завісу», опір сумнівам у усталених історичних наративах та недовіру інших країн до радянської науки ці знахідки залишилися практично непоміченими на Заході в той час.
Однак подальші дослідження лише зміцнили теорію про те, що перші міста світу були не в Месопотамії, а в Україні. Збудовані культурою Кукутень-Трипілля, яка процвітала в регіоні між 5500 і 2750 роками до н. е., ці «трипільські мегаміста» можуть випереджати перші міста Родючого Півмісяця на століття та переписати історію про те, коли вкоренилася урбанізація людства.
