PUTIN PROBABLY ISN’T LAUGHING ANY MORE
Trump has upended the war in Ukraine, but it isn’t just Zelensky feeling the pinch
It was telegraphed even before President Trump took office: “I will end this war in Ukraine”. And he set out the negotiating strategy, something most canny negotiators do not do – unless they hold all the cards. The announcement that the Ukrainians will agree to a 30 day ceasefire in exchange for the resumption of arms supplies and intelligence sharinghas now put the ball firmly in the Russian court. The telegraphed threat to them is “agree to a ceasefire or the US will arm the Ukrainians to the hilt, and you will lose”. I doubt Vladimir Putin is smiling so broadly now.
It is my belief that President Trump has his eyes set on a Nobel Peace Prize as his legacy. He must achieve this in this term and with peace deals on the table in Ukraine and in Gaza – both offers that can’t be refused – it looks like peace will be achieved. It will not be a perfect peace by any means, but the killing and the dying will stop.
In delivering these peace deals President Trump has once more smashed the norm, involving Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, not long ago an outcast due to his alleged involvement in the demise of the Journalist Kamal Khashoggi, but now a deal clincher and hero on the world stage.
On the other hand, the UK and European allies are gathered in dismay wondering how they will navigate a world without the certainty of a US defensive umbrella. Deal maker President Trump will just shrug his shoulders and say “it’s about time you bought your own umbrella. Our priorities for defence are now in the Pacific.” He’s not wrong, though for us on this side of the Atlantic it is nevertheless an unwelcome wake up call.

Це було передано ще до того, як президент Трамп вступив на посаду: «Я закінчу цю війну в Україні». І він виклав стратегію переговорів, чого не роблять найбільш спритні учасники переговорів, якщо вони не тримають усі карти. Оголошення про те, що українці погодяться на 30-денне припинення вогню в обмін на відновлення поставок зброї та обміну розвідувальними даними, тепер твердо поставило м’яч на бік Росії. Телеграфно погрожують їм: «погодьтеся на припинення вогню, або США озброять українців дощенту, і ви програєте». Я сумніваюся, що Владімір Путін зараз так широко посміхається.
Я переконаний, що президент Трамп звернув увагу на Нобелівську премію миру як на свою спадщину. Він повинен досягти цього протягом цього терміну, і з урахуванням мирних угод в Україні та в Газі – обох пропозицій, від яких неможливо відмовитися – схоже, мир буде досягнуто. Ідеального миру ні в якому разі не буде, але вбивства та смерть припиняться.
У досягненні цих мирних угод президент Трамп знову порушив норму, залучивши кронпринца Мохаммеда бін Салмана, який нещодавно був ізгоєм через його нібито причетність до смерті журналіста Камаля Хашоггі, а тепер став ключем до угоди та героєм на світовій арені.
З іншого боку, Сполучене Королівство та європейські союзники зібралися в жаху, дивуючись, як вони будуть керувати світом без певності оборонної парасольки США. Президент Трамп, який укладає угоди, просто знизає плечима і скаже: «Настав час купити власну парасольку». Наші пріоритети щодо оборони зараз у Тихому океані». Він не помиляється, хоча для нас, по цей бік Атлантики, це все одно небажаний тривожний дзвінок.
